Cotton's Weekly was f ounded in 1908 when William Cotton bought the local newspaper, The Observer, and changed it to a socialist newspaper which claimed a coast-to-coast circulation of 25,000 in 1912. See his summary in the Montreal Gazette, titled "Canadian Socialism 1908," 17 July 1942, p. 8.
