Although primarily American, Indigenous author Mourning Dove belonged to the Okanogan Nation, in the Okanagan Valley, which runs through southern BC and northern Washington. While most of her life was spent as a migrant worker, she also taught for a time in what is now Osoyoos, BC. She is regarded as the first Indigenous American woman to publish a novel.
