Critical Annotation

The English Lakes combines 75 colour illustrations of Lake District scenes with Palmer’s impressionistic descriptions. Claiming to have composed his descriptions from memory, Palmer offers “a harvest of perfect pictures” rather than an accurate reproduction of the scenes (3). Subjects range from fauna and geology to sports and antiquity. Though the text explains how to travel to the region and suggests several possible routes, the large size and fineness of the book make it more suited to the parlor than the trail. The SFU LDC copy is in good condition, with some foxing and bumped corners. It is bound in blue and gilt cloth. An insert advertising a travel book about Ireland is preserved within.
