Critical Annotation

This book is an abridged version of Prior’s Guide to the Lake District of England. Although it lacks the preface contained in earlier editions, it covers many of the topics, including “railway approaches, hotels and inns, customary charges, and general features of the district”; “towns, villages, and walks”; “carriage roads”; “pedestrian routes”, “mountains”; and “geologic notes and antiquities.” Outlines of numerous different routes are provided, each supported with simple, black-and-white illustrations and notes on landmarks and other points of interest. Explanations of geologic formations and antiquities like the Druid temples, stone circles, camps, and natural amphitheatres are also included, along with five inset maps. The book pocket-sized, and would have been a handy item for travellers to carry with them on their trips. The SFU LDC copy is bound in black cloth and in good condition, though the front cover has come loose. It bears a bookplate, “From the Emily & Gordon Bottomley Bequest” on the inside front cover. A previous owner has inscribed the note, “Harriet Martineau resided at the Knoll, Ambleside” in pencil on the rear flyleaf.
