Critical Annotation

The Lake Counties is a volume of essays on topics relating to the Lake District. W. G. Collingwood’s contribution is the longest, and opens the volume. It is a descriptive and historical guide to the Lake District’s lesser-traveled dales and valleys, distinguished by Collingwood’s exhaustive research and familiarity with the areas he describes. Descriptions of the landscape’s physical characteristics accompany historical anecdotes, some stretching as far back as the twelfth century. Buildings, roads, ruins, and relics receive comment as well, and some are pictured in inset illustrations. Sixteen full-colour plates, reproduced from the paintings of A. Reginald Smith, support the letterpress. The second section of the book contains shorter, variously authored essays on everything from local bird species, to glaciers, to fox-hunting. The third section is a comprehensive gazatteer. In the back of the volume, a detailed foldout map can be found. No matter one’s reason for traveling to the Lake District, The Lake Counties is a trove of information. However, its fineness and cumbersome size suggest it wasn’t intended to be used as a travel guide. The SFU LDC copy is in excellent condition, bound in brown cloth.
