Critical Annotation

Ward’s Pictorial and Descriptive Guide is a compact, reliable source of information for visitors to the Lake District. A preliminary section sketches the region’s history, geographic features, cultural significance, and lists popular leisure activities. A lengthy excerpt from Wordsworth’s description appears in this section, along with the familiar tables outlining dimensions of lakes and heights of mountains. Directions for dozens of pedestrian routes are located in the next part of the book, followed by a more limited set of direction for motorists. Four foldout maps and sixty black-and-white photographs are included with the text. Several of the photographs feature rock climbers, hikers, and tourists, but the majority are picturesque views of the lakes and mountains. Appearing at the front and back of the volume are advertisements for everything from hotels to books to life insurance. The SFU LDC holds a very good copy, bound in the original red paper.
