Critical Annotation

The Charm of the English Lake is an oversize album of Lake District views. The views (photographs by S. W. Colyer) draw heavily on the picturesque tradition: lakes are set against looming mountains and cloud-strewn skies with trees and human figures adding interest to the foreground. Boats are featured in some of the photographs, but other forms of transportation (like trains and automobiles) do not appear, though they are mentioned in the accompanying text. A brief introduction by Sir Hugh Walpole exalts the region’s natural beauty. Captions beneath each photograph list points of historical or cultural significance, such as Wordsworth’s connection to Hawkshead or Ruskin’s to Ambleside. The album would have made a fine souvenir: it is printed on heavy, smooth paper, bound in embossed green cloth and wrapped in a matching paper jacket. The SFU LDC copy is in excellent condition.
