Critical Annotation

The Lake District is a compact, eclectic travel guide, part of Chambers’s “Holiday Counties” series. It pairs concise descriptions and walking directions with black-and-white photographs of Lakeland scenes. Tips and tricks for hikers, excerpts of local lore, and book recommendations for travellers supplement the main text, and several pages in the middle of the book are dedicated to the biographies of Williams Wordsworth and Samuel Taylor Coleridge. Walking directions are organized alphabetically by place name, and for each place the authors include a list of popular trails, excursions, and climbs. Two climbing maps and one general-purpose map are enclosed within. Although The Lake District seems to have been intended as a guide, the ratio of practical information to pulp favours the latter. The SFU LDC copy is in excellent condition, bound in blue cloth with the original white paper jacket in tact.
