Critical Annotation

Walking in the Lake District is a detailed pedestrian guide, consisting almost entirely of written directions and descriptions. The main chapters are organized by location, but an appendix in the back of the book contains chapters on miscellaneous topics like glacial activity, volcanic rock, and trail safety. There are occasional references to cultural phenomena (such as architecture and the legacy of the Lake Poets) but the focus of the volume is on the physical landscape. Symonds evinces a strong commitment to conservation and urges readers to “keep watch over the mountains” (40). The book is designed to be useful for experienced and novice walkers alike; it does not include a map but recommends and frequently alludes to Bartholomew’s “One-Inch Map of the Lake District” (ix). Fourteen black-and-white photographs are included with the text (accompanying notes can be found in the appendix). The SFU LDC copy is in excellent condition, bound in green cloth with the original paper jacket in tact. A handwritten dedication is inscribed in pen on the front flyleaf (“To my beloved Leonard, Love Jean” dated August 1973).
