Critical Annotation

Dickinson’s Glossary of Words and Phrases aims to preserve and illuminate the particularities of the Cumbrian dialect. It includes a guide to dialect pronunciation, a list of plant and place names, and an alphabetized glossary of unusual Cumbrian words. It could be a useful reference for anyone studying historical documents produced in the region. The introduction gives a brief but valuable explanation of how pronunciation is tracked and presented, particularly as it relates to language changes (or adaptations by) Irish and Scottish settlers whose children adopt the area’s dialect. Rather than introducing their own “Irishisms” into the local dialect, Dickinson claims that settlers adopt local terminology. The SFU LDC copy is in excellent condition, despite having been part of the library’s circulating collection for many years. It is bound in non-descript, blue paper boards. There are a few small pen markings on the front cover.
