Critical Annotation

The Northern Lake District is a slim rock-climbing manual divided into sections covering ‘easier’ and ‘harder’ climbs. Author G. A. Hassall grades climbs on a three-star system, providing diagrams and point-form descriptions of each route. He also advises readers on how best to approach the base of the climb—whether by car, transit, or foot. The back matter includes advertisements for mountaineering equipment, magazines, and places to stay while in the Lake District. Appendices on “practice rocks” and winter climbing are also included. The SFU LDC copy is in very good condition. The paper cover shows some discolouration, but the pages within are pristine. A bookseller has pencilled a price of £25 near the top of the title page.
