Critical Annotation

Hervey’s Natural History of the Lake District promises to improve readers’ understanding and appreciation of the Lake District. Written by a “team of naturalists,” chapters feature expert opinions on a variety of topics, including geology and terrain, fauna, aquatic life, invertebrates, and vertebrates. Members of the Council for Nature and the Society for the Promotion of Nature Reserves (S.P.N.R.) and The Lake District Naturalists’ Trust (L.D. N.T.) share their knowledge and sincere desire to convince others to learn about, appreciate, and protect the area. Although there is an effort to explore broad concerns relating to land use and conservation, the text does not seem suited to a general audience: discussions of animals, soil, and plant life employ highly technical vocabularies. An index accompanies the main text, along with eight colour photographs and twenty-four black-and-white photographs; line drawings and simple maps also appear in some chapters. The SFU LDC copy is in very good condition, bound in green, pebbled cloth and wrapped in a laminated paper jacket. The jacket is discoloured and creased in a few places, but the binding and pages are pristine. The list price on the jacket is £3.00.
