Critical Annotation

The Lake District Sketchbook contains a series of simple, black-and-white illustrations by E. Jeffrey, the former cover artist for the Lake District magazine Cumbria. Most of the sketches are based on photographs taken by W. R. Mitchell. They offer a light-hearted, intimate view of daily life in the Lake District, organized thematically into the following sections: “Three Lakes,” “On View,” “Towns and Villages,” “Lakeland events,” “People at Work,” “Lakeland through the Year,” “Nature Reserves and Wild Life Parks,” and “Quiet Places.” Illustrations are arranged in collages, each accompanied by a brief prose description. One set of illustrations features characteristic images for each month in the calendar year. The SFU LDC copy is in excellent condition, bound in paper. A sticker appears on the inside of the front cover, probably the bookplate of a former owner. It reads: “J. Gavin, 2 Millans Court, Ambleside, Cumbria. LA22 9BW. Tel: 015394 32942 45586.” A photograph of the author and a short biography appear on the back cover.
