Critical Annotation

This new, illustrated edition of Wordsworth’s 1835 Guide features an introduction by Peter Bicknell and a forward by Alan G. Hill. Nearly two hundred images accompany the text, serving as illustrations and supplements to Wordsworth’s well-known descriptions. Images are drawn from the entire history of Lake District art, with some printed in colour and others in black-and-white. Together, the images convey a charming impression of the Lake District as it might have appeared to Wordsworth. Contemporary photographs offer a point of comparison, showing the appearance of area at the time of publication. In some of the views, the lack of change is striking, but others show the effects of the development and urbanization that Wordsworth anticipated in his Guide. Following the main text are a chronology, bibliography, and full index. An editorial note states that the book’s publication coincided with exhibitions at the Grasmere and Wordsworth Museum at Dove Cottage (31). The SFU LDC copy is in excellent condition; it is bound in teal cloth and wrapped in a lustrous paper jacket. A bookseller has pencilled a price of $30.00 near the top of the half title.
