Biographical Notes Mary Armitt was the youngest of three daughters of William Armitt. Musician, painter, and scholar she and her sisters founded a school after their father's death when she was only fifteen. Founded and endowed the Armitt Library in Ambleside shortly before her death. Involved in the intellectual circle of the Lake District.
Biographical Annotation Mary Armitt was an author and founder of the Armitt Library in Ambleside. The youngest of three sisters, she was born and raised in Lancashire, but in 1886 retired with her sister Sophia to Hawkshead. Later, the pair moved to Rydal. Mary wrote prolifically for most of her life, and developed an expertise on the local bird population. Shortly before her death, she founded the Armitt Library became an important repository for rare books about the Lake District. It boasted many prominent subscribers, including Beatrix Potter.
