Biographical Notes | Baines was the son of Edward Baines (1774-1848), editor of the Leeds Mercury. The younger Baines also pursued journalism, before being elected to Parliament as an MP for Leeds in 1859 and serving until 1874. He was a founding member of the Leeds Literary and Philosophical Society and interested in making education more available for people of all ages and classes. He published travel accounts of voyages in Europe and the UK. |
Biographical Annotation | Edward Baines was born on 28 May 1800 in Leeds, son to the elder Edward Baines (1774-1848), who was editor of the Leeds Mercury. Baines the younger moved to Manchester for school, and remained there to work as a teacher, politician, and journalist. He had liberal views about education and political reform, and published several books on his political views. He also published literature on foreign travel, including an account of his tour through the Lakes. Baines was a founding member of the Leeds Literary and Philosophical Society. He was knighted in 1881, and died on 2 March 1890 in Yorkshire. |
