Biographical Notes John Joseph Briggs was a naturalist and country writer who studied and wrote primarily close to his birthplace in Derbyshire. In 1834 he was an apprentice of Bemrose & Sons; however, as a result of his weak health Briggs gave up printing about 1840 and returned to the family occupation of farming.
Biographical Annotation John Briggs was a teacher and a self-fashioned patron of the arts. He was apprenticed to the printer Bamrose & Sons in 1834, but gave up printing in 1840 because of his weak health. He lived most of his life in the Lake District, and was the chief editor of local magazines like The Lonsdale Miscellany and The Westmorland Gazette. He was a prolific essayist and an amateur artist, but never achieved notoriety. His primary occupation was farming.
