Biographical Notes Knighted in 1814, Sir William Gell is known for his success as a classical archaeologist and intellectual intermediary who had influential friends such as Sir Walter Scott and Princess Caroline.
Biographical Annotation William Gell was born in Derbyshire and educated at Jesus College, Cambridge. He was a classical archaeologist and traveller, and published several topographical studies of Italy and Greece, all of which he illustrated himself. He was acquainted with Princess Caroline and Sir Walter Scott. In 1820, he moved to Italy, and remained there until his death.
