Biographical Notes Craig was a surgeon and folklorist. From his youth he had contributed to newspapers and wrote a few texs which were based on close observations of the local communities in which he lived and they attempted to balance the romantic images of the Lake Distrct society promulgated by Wordsworth and others by providing a grass-roots portrait of life in the valley.
Biographical Annotation Alexander Craig Gibson was born at Harrington, Cumberland. He undertook medical training at Whitehaven, and later at Edinburgh University, moving to Coniston in 1843 to serve as a surgeon in the copper mines. An avid writer, he contributed to antiquarian and medical periods, and published several books on the people and culture of Lancashire. [info from ODNB]
