Biographical Notes Mill's interest in meteorology began in university and expanded after his studies at Edinburgh. He assisted in pioneer mapping the depths of the English Lakes and put forward a plan to prepare a geography of Britain based on the records of the ordinance survey and agricultural and meteorological statistics. Unfortunately, it failed to gain support and funding. He was considered an expert on the Antarctic, though he never travelled to any polar region.
Biographical Annotation Hugh Robert Mill was an influential Scottish geographer and founder of the Scottish Geographical society. He studied chemistry at Edinburgh University, but later specialized in meteorology, oceanography and topography. Though poor vision kept him from traveling, his expertise on the polar regions made him the respected advisor of many explorers. During his lifetime he was joint director of the British Rainfall Organization and British representative on the International Council for the Study of the Sea. [info from ODNB]
