Biographical Notes |
Otley lived in the Lake District for most of his life, working as a watchmaker and a land-surveyor. He had a strong desire to understand the area around Grasmere and Keswick, and invented the instruments he needed, including a rain gauge which he erected on the highest point of Crow Park, and which he used to take daily readings from 1841 until 1852, when he was no longer able to manage the difficult walk. |

Otley was well loved by locals; he was a friend of the mapmaker, Peter Crosthewaite, and the physicist, John Dalton. [info from Wikipedia and memoir included in 1850 edition of Otley's guidebook.] |
