Let's take a look at how to crop and
resize images in Photoshop CC

0:00:04.500,0:00:07.840
I have my artwork open here. And I'm
going to go to the crop tool

0:00:08.000,0:00:09.660
which is right here and click on it.

0:00:10.100,0:00:11.840
You can crop in two ways...

0:00:11.860,0:00:16.800
one is you can draw a box for your crop using the crop tool

0:00:17.340,0:00:19.180
I'll cancel this crop by clicking on undo

0:00:19.700,0:00:22.120
Or you can just start
dragging the corner

0:00:22.300,0:00:26.140
of these corner points here to create your
crop

0:00:26.380,0:00:30.420
you can drag the image around to
reposition it within the crop

0:00:31.180,0:00:35.640
and if you want a specific crop size,
which you probably are going to want most of the time

0:00:35.840,0:00:40.200
you'll want to change this setting from Ratio to Width x Height x Resolution

0:00:41.360,0:00:44.340
And for the width, let's say we want 10 inches

0:00:44.600,0:00:46.640
I'll type "10 IN" and hit the Enter key

0:00:47.149,0:00:50.469
And then type "8 IN" and then hit the Enter key

0:00:50.700,0:00:52.820
And we'll choose 300 dpi/ppi for the resolution

0:00:53.060,0:00:57.620
So now we have a crop that is 10 inches
by 8 inches which is a standard frame size

0:00:57.900,0:01:01.700
Now let's move our image so it fills that space

0:01:02.120,0:01:05.260
these lines that you see here are known as the "Rule
Of Thirds Grid"

0:01:05.460,0:01:09.940
these help you compose the piece. You can
put areas of interest within the squares,

0:01:10.140,0:01:14.239
or along these lines or at the intersecting
points where these lines intersect each other

0:01:14.720,0:01:19.130
For instance, I will frame the head
in this square, the body in this square, and so on

0:01:20.000,0:01:22.800
When you're ready to go ahead
and crop, click on the check box

0:01:23.400,0:01:27.361
and that will crop the image.
If you're not happy with that crop, you can use CTRL+Z

0:01:27.800,0:01:31.220
to do an Undo and you can start over with a different crop

0:01:31.680,0:01:37.680
Now once you have this set to 8x10,
it is always going to stay locked in av 8x10 ratio.

0:01:38.080,0:01:42.360
So if you want to unlock
it, you have to go ahead and click the clear button

0:01:42.360,0:01:45.680
and that will clear the settings
and put it back to its default

0:01:45.680,0:01:49.270
The reason for cropping to 8x10 is because you may want to print this

0:01:49.280,0:01:51.600
on an 8x10 piece of paper and put it in an 8x10 inch frame

0:01:51.600,0:01:56.240
If you want to print it for a different frame size, you would want to
crop your image to that particular frame size

0:01:56.400,0:02:02.000
So generally speaking, you don't want to
just crop things visually

0:02:02.320,0:02:05.730
you want to crop at a specific frame size
or a specific print size

0:02:07.160,0:02:11.200
There's an option
here for Delete Cropped Pixels if you just want to erase all of
this cropped area.

0:02:11.260,0:02:14.420
If you're not worried about saving it, go ahead and leave Delete Cropped Pixels checked.

0:02:14.700,0:02:18.060
However, if
you're not sure that you want to throw away the background yet

0:02:18.280,0:02:21.880
or if you may want to change this crop, go
ahead and uncheck Delete Cropped Pixels

0:02:22.200,0:02:25.820
That will crop the image, but all of that cropped area will still actually be recoverable

0:02:26.140,0:02:28.740
So if you want to go back and change
your crop again

0:02:30.080,0:02:31.040
like so

0:02:31.720,0:02:35.420
you have access to that full area again

0:02:35.660,0:02:39.270
Now what if you want to straighten an image
while you crop it?

0:02:39.270,0:02:43.150
What you'll want to do is select the Crop
Tool, click on the Straighten icon here

0:02:43.320,0:02:46.961
and then drag a line along your
horizon

0:02:46.961,0:02:49.321
you can also do this along a vertical line

0:02:49.540,0:02:54.060
And that will automatically straighten your image and bring up a crop box

0:02:54.140,0:02:56.300
And then you can go
ahead and adjust the crop.

0:02:56.520,0:03:00.311
So that's cropping. But what if you want
to resize an image manually?

0:03:00.320,0:03:03.380
Go to Image > Image Size

0:03:03.600,0:03:06.480
This is going to show you a preview
of the image

0:03:06.620,0:03:08.500
and you can make the image larger or
smaller.

0:03:08.740,0:03:11.060
Currently, I'm measuring the image in pixels

0:03:11.060,0:03:14.451
so if I want to, I can change this from
pixels to inches

0:03:14.560,0:03:18.360
So let's say I want to make the image smaller. Let's
change the height to 4 and see what happens

0:03:18.920,0:03:22.311
Now it's going to make sure that this is
four inches

0:03:22.320,0:03:25.120
and that the image stays in proportion because I
have this lock enabled

0:03:25.120,0:03:28.260
if I uncheck this lock, I can change
the proportion

0:03:28.260,0:03:30.200
and then change the image to 4x6.

0:03:30.480,0:03:34.620
You can see that's gonna
squish the image when I do that

0:03:34.960,0:03:39.640
So what you
would want to do is go back and crop it to 4x6 not resize it to 4x6

0:03:39.960,0:03:45.100
Most of the time you won't want to
stretch the image, so you'll want to keep this lock enabled

0:03:45.480,0:03:46.960
So let's say 4x5

0:03:47.160,0:03:50.080
We can also change the resolution. If
we're going to put this on the web,

0:03:50.120,0:03:53.179
you wouldn't want the resolution to be so
high.

0:03:53.240,0:03:56.660
You would want a resolution to be 72 for the web. For printing, we want to print at 300

0:03:56.960,0:04:00.260
Let's go ahead and look at the re-sampling options here.

0:04:00.420,0:04:03.490
If you're making the image smaller, you'll want change it to Reduction.

0:04:03.490,0:04:05.950
If you're making the image bigger, you want to change it to Enlargement

0:04:05.950,0:04:11.770
Most the time you should avoid enlarging images because it can make the image blurry and blocky

0:04:11.980,0:04:15.100
If you do enlarge, make sure you choose Preserve Details

0:04:15.200,0:04:20.000
And you can choose to reduce the Noise a little bit which will make it a little less blocky

0:04:20.460,0:04:23.560
I will go ahead and choose Reduction since I'm making the image smaller

0:04:23.560,0:04:24.520
and click OK

0:04:25.120,0:04:26.740
And now we've shrunk the image down a bit

0:04:27.040,0:04:31.700
Now what if we want to make the canvas
bigger without resizing the image?

0:04:31.800,0:04:35.920
Let's click on Image > Canvas Size

0:04:36.120,0:04:40.220
And if you choose an origin point, it's
going to expand the canvas from that location.

0:04:40.220,0:04:43.801
Center, top, bottom and so on.
Let's choose from the center

0:04:44.180,0:04:48.560
Let's expand the canvas. Let's make it 10
inches wide by 8 inches tall

0:04:48.860,0:04:49.980
Click OK

0:04:50.560,0:04:54.940
Now if we zoom out, you can see that we've expanded the canvas without enlarging the image

0:04:55.240,0:04:57.340
Now let's take a look at one more way to crop

0:04:57.700,0:05:00.000
We can also crop with a
mask

0:05:00.000,0:05:03.020
So let's say we're going to make a custom crop here

0:05:03.020,0:05:05.620
I'm going to use the
Polygonal Lasso Tool

0:05:05.960,0:05:10.980
Next, I'm going to cut out a shape
around the area I want to cut out

0:05:11.580,0:05:16.000
And then I will create a layer mask
by clicking on the layer mask icon

0:05:16.500,0:05:20.480
What that does is that creates a nice
custom crop around the image

0:05:20.720,0:05:22.720
And then since this is
a mask,

0:05:22.720,0:05:27.000
we can always just delete that layer mask if we don't
want to keep that crop

0:05:27.420,0:05:31.720
Now when you create a layer mask, you're
going to be in Mask Mode until you exit out of it

0:05:31.720,0:05:36.700
So to exit out of mask mode, you click to
the left onto little thumbnail for your layer

0:05:37.200,0:05:40.160
And then you can go ahead and continue
working in Photoshop as you would normally

0:05:40.160,0:05:43.140
If you want to work on the mask
again you have to click back on the mask

0:05:43.380,0:05:45.620
Let's take a look at how to resize the
image a little bit.

0:05:45.740,0:05:47.880
If you press the Control+T on your keyboard,

0:05:47.980,0:05:51.100
or you go to Edit > Free Transform

0:05:51.100,0:05:54.440
you'll enable Free Transform mode. If you drag on one of the corner points,

0:05:54.820,0:05:56.600
you can resize your image

0:05:57.120,0:06:02.060
Now generally speaking, it's best to avoid enlarging your image this way

0:06:02.060,0:06:04.880
because it is going to get a little blurry and blocky

0:06:04.880,0:06:08.019
But you can resize it a
little bit without too much trouble

0:06:08.420,0:06:10.940
So there are some different
ways to crop and resize your artwork

0:06:10.940,0:06:13.120
and your images using Photoshop CC

0:06:13.360,0:06:18.460
