Description

Hello and welcome to this episode of Denny’s Tips. Today, I’ll be showing you how to emphasize freckles and add a dim moody effect in Photoshop. I don’t remember exactly where I saw this effect but I do remember someone asking about it on /r/postprocessing and I thought it’d be a nice tutorial especially for beginners who don’t have much experience with Photoshop. It’s an easy simple effect and you’ll be learning how to do this with a very minimal and nondestructive set of layers.

0:00:03.440,0:00:07.859
hello and welcome to this episode of

0:00:05.730,0:00:09.900
standing tip today I'll be showing how

0:00:07.859,0:00:12.000
to emphasize records and advert in wood

0:00:09.900,0:00:13.769
effect in Photoshop I don't remember

0:00:12.000,0:00:15.660
exactly where I gotta see text I do

0:00:13.769,0:00:17.640
remember seeing someone asking about it

0:00:15.660,0:00:18.960
in the post passing subreddit and I

0:00:17.640,0:00:20.609
thought that it'd be a nice tutorial

0:00:18.960,0:00:23.039
especially for beginners you don't have

0:00:20.609,0:00:24.689
much experience with Photoshop it's an

0:00:23.039,0:00:26.340
easy effect and you'll be learning how

0:00:24.689,0:00:33.210
to do this with a very minimal and

0:00:26.340,0:00:34.559
non-destructive set up later we're going

0:00:33.210,0:00:36.120
to start by enhancing the freckles

0:00:34.559,0:00:38.520
there's a couple ways to enhance

0:00:36.120,0:00:39.719
freckles in Photoshop in the past I

0:00:38.520,0:00:41.969
taught people how to use the yellow

0:00:39.719,0:00:44.100
channel to hide or enhance records and

0:00:41.969,0:00:45.690
it works very well if you want to learn

0:00:44.100,0:00:47.280
how to do that is the one of my older

0:00:45.690,0:00:48.840
videos and you can find a link by

0:00:47.280,0:00:51.690
clicking on the info card on the top

0:00:48.840,0:00:53.219
right corner but for this video I'll

0:00:51.690,0:00:55.649
show you another way of doing it that's

0:00:53.219,0:00:58.620
simpler faster and still gives a great

0:00:55.649,0:01:00.390
result here's how to do it in the

0:00:58.620,0:01:02.280
adjustments panel add a channels

0:01:00.390,0:01:04.379
adjustment layer if you don't see this

0:01:02.280,0:01:08.700
panel you can open it by going to wyndle

0:01:04.379,0:01:10.500
adjustment in the properties panel start

0:01:08.700,0:01:11.990
by checking a monochrome option which

0:01:10.500,0:01:15.960
will make this lawyer black and white

0:01:11.990,0:01:20.159
next 30 Reds to minus-50 greens to

0:01:15.960,0:01:21.900
minus-50 and blues to 200 you can also

0:01:20.159,0:01:24.960
adjust the constant slider here if you

0:01:21.900,0:01:26.250
need to adjust the brightness and as you

0:01:24.960,0:01:28.350
can see what this black-and-white layer

0:01:26.250,0:01:30.780
it's really emphasizing and bring LT

0:01:28.350,0:01:32.970
freckles next change the blending mode

0:01:30.780,0:01:35.509
of this layer to luminosity and then

0:01:32.970,0:01:35.509
adjust the opacity

0:01:35.590,0:01:40.880
[Music]

0:01:38.080,0:01:42.470
now when we turn on an office layer you

0:01:40.880,0:01:44.660
can see it's really emphasizing the

0:01:42.470,0:01:46.640
freckles if you only want definitely

0:01:44.660,0:01:49.100
affected skin you can paint in the layer

0:01:46.640,0:01:51.050
mask start by selecting the UA or math

0:01:49.100,0:01:53.260
in the layers panel and then press ctrl

0:01:51.050,0:01:55.820
or command I to invert it to black

0:01:53.260,0:01:58.070
select your brush tool make sure your

0:01:55.820,0:01:59.690
foreground color is white and then paint

0:01:58.070,0:02:08.570
over the areas where you want to affect

0:01:59.690,0:02:10.250
your pair next we're going to add an

0:02:08.570,0:02:11.780
effect that gives a dim and warming fact

0:02:10.250,0:02:14.000
using the tone curse which is the most

0:02:11.780,0:02:15.650
efficient way of doing it for this

0:02:14.000,0:02:17.510
tutorial due tomm curse will go apply

0:02:15.650,0:02:18.890
it's very simple and easy so you don't

0:02:17.510,0:02:21.230
mean you to fully understand the tools

0:02:18.890,0:02:22.490
to be able to follow along well if you

0:02:21.230,0:02:24.080
have the time I highly recommend

0:02:22.490,0:02:26.270
watching the tone cursed video in the

0:02:24.080,0:02:28.160
info card on the top right corner the

0:02:26.270,0:02:29.480
tone curve is the most useful adjustment

0:02:28.160,0:02:30.920
for photographers and you can find in

0:02:29.480,0:02:33.710
pretty much every image editing software

0:02:30.920,0:02:35.600
like Lightroom affinity photo capture

0:02:33.710,0:02:38.720
one and even some mobile apps like

0:02:35.600,0:02:41.000
Snapseed and light blue mobile so here's

0:02:38.720,0:02:43.670
how to add to effect in the adjustments

0:02:41.000,0:02:44.959
panel add a curves adjustment layer here

0:02:43.670,0:02:47.180
we're going to start with the RGB

0:02:44.959,0:02:49.360
channel drag the top right point

0:02:47.180,0:02:51.560
downwards like this to dim the image

0:02:49.360,0:02:53.150
next click on the middle part of the

0:02:51.560,0:02:55.220
chart and add a point right in the

0:02:53.150,0:02:58.610
center there's always 30 right notes

0:02:55.220,0:03:00.170
while keeping the dim look next click on

0:02:58.610,0:03:02.630
the drop down menu and switch it a blue

0:03:00.170,0:03:04.190
channel for a lot of people do red green

0:03:02.630,0:03:06.470
and blue tone curve is where people get

0:03:04.190,0:03:07.760
the most complete and for those of you

0:03:06.470,0:03:09.830
who don't know how to use the tone curve

0:03:07.760,0:03:12.850
here's an easy way to understand how it

0:03:09.830,0:03:15.020
works imagine the tone curves like this

0:03:12.850,0:03:16.760
this is that actually what it looks like

0:03:15.020,0:03:18.830
in Photoshop but imagine that it does

0:03:16.760,0:03:20.540
and keep this image in your head as

0:03:18.830,0:03:23.330
you're adjusting it will make things so

0:03:20.540,0:03:25.190
much easier so we go to a blue channel

0:03:23.330,0:03:26.840
and drag the top right point downwards

0:03:25.190,0:03:29.959
like this it will attempt to highlight

0:03:26.840,0:03:31.910
yellow next 50 bottom left point upwards

0:03:29.959,0:03:33.890
like this to 10 a very tiny amount of

0:03:31.910,0:03:36.200
blues and the shadows

0:03:33.890,0:03:38.240
and we're done here's how the image

0:03:36.200,0:03:40.550
looks like before and after this

0:03:38.240,0:03:44.510
adjustment using the tone curve is the

0:03:40.550,0:03:45.950
best way to keep your layers minimal to

0:03:44.510,0:03:47.420
complete this image we're going to add a

0:03:45.950,0:03:49.730
simple lighting effect with just one

0:03:47.420,0:03:51.770
gradient fill layer in the layers panel

0:03:49.730,0:03:54.620
click on a new so or adjustment layer

0:03:51.770,0:03:55.850
button here and select gradient fill by

0:03:54.620,0:03:57.020
the way you won't find it in the

0:03:55.850,0:03:58.730
adjustments panel because it's

0:03:57.020,0:04:01.010
technically a fill layer and not an

0:03:58.730,0:04:02.810
adjustment layer in the gradient fill

0:04:01.010,0:04:05.239
option select a black to white gradient

0:04:02.810,0:04:07.220
if you don't see this you can click on

0:04:05.239,0:04:10.700
the COG wheel icon and select respect

0:04:07.220,0:04:13.430
gradient next set the style to radial

0:04:10.700,0:04:15.050
and check my dear reverse option adjust

0:04:13.430,0:04:16.700
the scale to however large you wanted to

0:04:15.050,0:04:19.930
be i'll set my to about one hundred

0:04:16.700,0:04:22.460
fifty percent click OK when you're done

0:04:19.930,0:04:23.990
we now have a great end and to make it

0:04:22.460,0:04:26.480
blend in with your photo change the

0:04:23.990,0:04:27.620
blending mode to soft light i'm going to

0:04:26.480,0:04:28.790
move this layer below the curves

0:04:27.620,0:04:30.500
adjustment layer so that it doesn't

0:04:28.790,0:04:34.310
override the tone curves that we made

0:04:30.500,0:04:36.200
earlier now we can reposition delight to

0:04:34.310,0:04:38.750
do that double-click on the thumbnail to

0:04:36.200,0:04:40.340
readjust the gradient fill setting click

0:04:38.750,0:04:41.510
and drag on your document and you'll

0:04:40.340,0:04:43.760
notice that the light moves around

0:04:41.510,0:04:45.830
wherever your mouth is I'm going to

0:04:43.760,0:04:47.840
precision mine around here and I'm also

0:04:45.830,0:04:52.430
going to readjust the scale to enlarge

0:04:47.840,0:04:54.260
the gradient we're done if we turn on

0:04:52.430,0:04:56.210
and off this layer you can see I changes

0:04:54.260,0:04:58.430
relighting a lot unlike a traditional

0:04:56.210,0:05:00.229
vignette this gradient overlay can be

0:04:58.430,0:05:03.410
repositioned anywhere and it's a great

0:05:00.229,0:05:05.000
way to add focus to your photo here's

0:05:03.410,0:05:06.110
how the image looks like before and

0:05:05.000,0:05:09.819
after

hey thanks for watching this video is s

0:05:19.650,0:05:22.830
stock photo for this video and it's

0:05:21.540,0:05:25.050
obviously for demonstrations for

0:05:22.830,0:05:27.210
visibility how good the defect looks

0:05:25.050,0:05:30.000
really depends on what photo is the web

0:05:27.210,0:05:32.070
and your personal preference also I

0:05:39.180,0:05:43.650
thank you again so much for watching and

0:05:41.790,0:05:45.330
if you prefer to my channel thank you so

0:00:00.000,0:00:06.480
Hello and welcome to episode of Denny's tips.

0:00:06.480,0:00:08.280
Today, I'll be showing how to emphasize

0:00:08.280,0:00:10.440
freckles and add dim moody effect in

0:00:10.440,0:00:12.780
Photoshop. I don't remember exactly where

0:00:12.780,0:00:14.460
I saw this effect but I remember seeing

0:00:14.460,0:00:16.650
someone asking about it in the post-processing

0:00:16.650,0:00:18.630
subreddit and I thought I'd be a nice

0:00:18.630,0:00:20.310
tutorial especially for beginners who

0:00:20.310,0:00:21.420
don't have much experience with

0:00:21.420,0:00:24.180
photoshop. It's an effect and you'll

0:00:24.180,0:00:25.680
be learning how to do this with very

0:00:25.680,0:00:27.750
minimal and non destructive set of layers.

0:00:32.940,0:00:34.140
We're going to start by enhancing the

0:00:34.140,0:00:34.860
freckles.

0:00:34.860,0:00:36.690
There's a couple ways to enhance freckles

0:00:36.690,0:00:38.760
in Photoshop in the past, I taught

0:00:38.760,0:00:40.260
people how to use the yellow channel to

0:00:40.260,0:00:42.329
hide or enhance freckles and it works

0:00:42.329,0:00:44.489
very well. If you want to learn how to do

0:00:44.489,0:00:46.289
that, it's in one of my older videos and

0:00:46.289,0:00:47.760
you can find the link by clicking on the

0:00:47.760,0:00:50.879
info card on the top right corner. Before

0:00:50.879,0:00:52.530
this video, I'll show you another way of

0:00:52.530,0:00:55.140
doing it that simpler, faster and still

0:00:55.140,0:00:56.550
gives a great result.

0:00:56.550,0:00:59.070
Here's how to do it, in the adjustments

0:00:59.070,0:01:01.800
panel add a channel an adjustment layer. If

0:01:01.800,0:01:03.449
you don't see the panel, you can open it

0:01:03.449,0:01:07.170
by going to "Window -> Adjustments" in the

0:01:07.170,0:01:09.240
"Properties Panel", start by checking the

0:01:09.240,0:01:10.860
mono chrome option which will make this

0:01:10.860,0:01:13.860
layer black-and-white. Next, set the Reds to

0:01:13.860,0:01:19.979
-50, Green to -50 and Blues to 200. You can

0:01:19.979,0:01:21.780
also adjust the constant slider here if

0:01:21.780,0:01:24.840
you need to adjust the brightness and as

0:01:24.840,0:01:25.860
you can see, with this black-and-white

0:01:25.860,0:01:28.020
layer, it's really emphasizing and bringing

0:01:28.020,0:01:30.750
out the freckles. Next, change the blend mode

0:01:30.750,0:01:33.299
of this layer to luminosity and then adjust

0:01:33.299,0:01:35.509
the opacity.

0:01:36.450,0:01:40.860
Now when we turn on and off this layer, you

0:01:40.860,0:01:42.420
can see it's really emphasizing your

0:01:42.420,0:01:44.610
freckles. If you only want this layer to

0:01:44.610,0:01:46.409
effect the skin, you can paint in the

0:01:46.409,0:01:49.170
layer mask. Start by selecting the layer mask

0:01:49.170,0:01:51.450
in the layers panel and press "CTRL or

0:01:51.450,0:01:54.750
command I" to turn it into black select your brush tool,

0:01:54.750,0:01:56.700
make sure your foreground color is white

0:01:56.700,0:01:59.039
and then paint over the areas where you

0:01:59.039,0:02:02.119
want to the effect to appear.

0:02:07.500,0:02:08.940
Next we're going to an effect that

0:02:08.950,0:02:10.570
gives a dim and warm effect using the

0:02:10.570,0:02:11.740
tone curve which is the most

0:02:11.740,0:02:13.960
efficient way of doing this.

0:02:13.960,0:02:15.790
For this tutorial the tone curves where we'll apply

0:02:15.790,0:02:17.620
is very simple and easy so you don't need

0:02:17.620,0:02:19.210
to fully understand the tool to be able

0:02:19.210,0:02:21.520
to follow along, but if you have the time,

0:02:21.520,0:02:23.320
I highly recommend watching the tone

0:02:23.320,0:02:24.820
curve video in the info card on the

0:02:24.820,0:02:27.310
top right corner. The tone curve is the most

0:02:27.310,0:02:28.960
useful adjustment for photographers and

0:02:28.960,0:02:30.520
you can find in pretty much every image

0:02:30.520,0:02:32.650
editing software like Lightroom, Affinity

0:02:32.650,0:02:35.050
photo, Capture one and even some mobile

0:02:35.050,0:02:38.440
apps like Snapseed. And lately mobile, so

0:02:38.440,0:02:40.390
here's how to add the effect in the

0:02:40.390,0:02:42.130
adjustments panel, add a curves

0:02:42.130,0:02:44.020
adjustment layer here. We're going to

0:02:44.020,0:02:46.300
start with the RGB channel, jack the

0:02:46.300,0:02:48.190
top-rate point downwards like this to

0:02:48.190,0:02:51.160
give the image. Next, click on the middle

0:02:51.160,0:02:53.020
part of the chart and add a point right in

0:02:53.020,0:02:53.770
the center.

0:02:53.770,0:02:55.450
This will restore your brightness while

0:02:55.450,0:02:56.980
keeping the dim look.

0:02:56.980,0:02:59.440
Next, click on the drop-down menu and

0:02:59.440,0:03:01.570
switch the blue channel for a lot of

0:03:01.570,0:03:03.370
people, the red green and blue tone curve

0:03:03.370,0:03:04.780
is where people get the most confused

0:03:04.780,0:03:06.970
and for those of you who don't know how

0:03:06.970,0:03:08.080
to use the tone curves,

0:03:08.080,0:03:09.820
there's an easy way to understand how it

0:03:09.820,0:03:12.220
works. Imagine the tone curves like

0:03:12.220,0:03:15.130
this, this isn't actually what it looks like in

0:03:15.130,0:03:17.650
Photoshop but imagine that it does and

0:03:17.650,0:03:19.150
keep this image in your head as you're

0:03:19.150,0:03:20.590
adjusting, it'll make things so much

0:03:20.590,0:03:23.980
easier. So we go to blue channel and drag

0:03:23.980,0:03:25.540
the top right point downwards like this,

0:03:25.540,0:03:28.780
it'll tint the highlights yellow, next 50

0:03:28.780,0:03:30.519
bottom left point upwards like this to

0:03:30.519,0:03:32.620
tint a very tiny amount of blues in the

0:03:32.620,0:03:36.010
shadows. And we're done, here is how the

0:03:36.010,0:03:38.200
image looks like before and after this

0:03:38.200,0:03:40.330
adjustment. Using the tone curves

0:03:40.330,0:03:41.860
is the best way to keep your layers

0:03:41.860,0:03:44.110
minimal.

0:03:44.110,0:03:46.300
To complete this image we're gonna do a simple

0:03:46.300,0:03:47.860
lighting effect with just one gradient

0:03:47.860,0:03:50.440
fill layer. In the layers panel click on

0:03:50.440,0:03:51.880
a new fill or adjustment layer button

0:03:51.880,0:03:54.880
here and select gradient fill. By the way

0:03:54.880,0:03:56.290
you won't find it in the adjustments

0:03:56.290,0:03:58.120
panel because it's technically a fill layer

0:03:58.120,0:04:00.610
and not an adjustment layer. In the gradient

0:04:00.610,0:04:02.710
fill option, select the black to white

0:04:02.710,0:04:04.960
gradient. If you don't see that, you can

0:04:04.960,0:04:06.790
click on the cogwheel icon and select

0:04:06.790,0:04:10.300
preset gradient, next set the style to

0:04:10.300,0:04:12.280
radial and check the reverse option.

0:04:12.280,0:04:14.650
Adjust the scale to however large you

0:04:14.650,0:04:16.840
wanted to be. I'll set my to about a hundred

0:04:16.840,0:04:19.390
fifty percent click OK when you're done.

0:04:19.390,0:04:22.419
We now have a gradient and to make it

0:04:22.419,0:04:23.980
blend in with your photo, change the

0:04:23.980,0:04:26.440
blending mode to soft light. I want to

0:04:26.440,0:04:27.640
move this layer below the curves

0:04:27.640,0:04:29.350
adjustment layer so it doesn't override

0:04:29.350,0:04:32.440
the tone curves that we made earlier. Now

0:04:32.440,0:04:34.900
we can reposition the light, to do that

0:04:34.900,0:04:36.220
double-click on the thumbnail to

0:04:36.220,0:04:38.740
readjust the gradient fill setting. Click

0:04:38.740,0:04:40.330
and drag on your document and you'll

0:04:40.330,0:04:41.500
notice that the light moves around

0:04:41.500,0:04:44.020
wherever your mouse is, I'm gonna position

0:04:44.020,0:04:46.120
mine around here and I'm also going to

0:04:46.120,0:04:48.010
readjust the scale to enlarge the

0:04:48.010,0:04:52.660
gradient. We're done, if we turn on and

0:04:52.660,0:04:54.250
off this layer you can see it changes

0:04:54.250,0:04:56.200
the lighting a lot, unlike a traditional

0:04:56.200,0:04:58.390
vignette this gradient overlay can be

0:04:58.390,0:05:00.190
repositioned anywhere and it's a great

0:05:00.190,0:05:01.960
way to add focus to your photo.

0:05:01.960,0:05:05.500
Here's how the image look like before and

0:05:05.500,0:05:09.820
after.

0:05:14.500,0:05:20.560
Hey, thanks for watching this video I use a stock photo for this video

0:05:20.580,0:05:22.660
and it's obviously for demonstration

0:05:22.660,0:05:25.449
purposes only but how could this effect looks really

0:05:25.449,0:05:28.780
depends on what photo you use it with and your personal preference

0:05:28.780,0:05:32.680
Also, I recommend you start with a stronger effect

0:05:32.680,0:05:34.960
similar to what I did in this video because if you want to

0:05:34.960,0:05:37.300
make the effect weaker, you can just lower the

0:05:37.300,0:05:40.389
opacity. Anyways, thank you again so much

0:05:40.389,0:05:43.000
for watching and if you liked my channel,

0:05:43.000,0:05:44.830
thank you so much for your support, I really

0:05:44.830,0:05:46.720
appreciate it. Please remember to like this

0:05:46.720,0:05:48.340
video if you liked it and I'll see you

0:05:48.340,0:05:51.330
again next week.
