Critical Annotation

Echoes of the Lakes and Mountains is a small, eclectic volume of anecdotes about the Lake District. Most of the anecdotes are based on local legend, but some describe historical figures associated with the region, including William Wordsworth, Robert Southey, and Thomas de Quincey. The poetry of these and other figures is centrally featured, often supplementing prose descriptions of places, traditions, or events. The editors’ primary focus is on the cultural heritage of the Lake District, with considerably more attention paid to local customs and myths than to the physical landscape. In the preface, they express hope that the book will inspire readers to tour the region and see its antiquities for themselves (iii). Two black and white engravings accompany the text, and advertisements for hotels in the Lake District are inserted at the back. The SFU LDC copy is in very good condition, bound in brown cloth with gilt embossing. The signature of a previous owner, dated March 1949, adorns the inside front cover.
