Thomas Beecham was born at Oxfordshire in 1820 and died in Wychwood in 1907. The son of agricultural labourers, Beecham received only of year of schooling before becoming a shepard’s apprentice. During his time in the fields, he garnered a thorough understanding of herbal lore, and began selling remedial pills of powdered ginger and aloe from about 1840 onward. Beecham married and moved to St. Helens in 1859, and began to advertise his medicines in the local press, building a network of sellers, and gradually achieving financial stability and success. He was married and separated multiple times throughout his life, and fathered many children both inside and outside of these unions. (info from ODNB) |
