At the instance of the Marquis of Queensberry the estate of Oscar Wilde has been declared bankrupt on account of a claim for £600 as costs in the recent action for criminal libel.
[A London contemporary of recent date published the following: — "The Marquis of Queensberry incurred the heavy expense of between £500 and £600 in getting evidence to support the plea of justification with which he successfully met the recent abortive charge of libel. The Treasury has now offered him £79 15s. towards his costs; but the marquis has declined to receive that inadequate sum."]
