PUNCHERIES

THE Marquis of Queensberry attended the theatre on the first night of Oscar Wilde's latest play, armed with a bunch of carrots which he intended hurling at the author. His intention was divined, however, and he was compelled to leave his carrots with the stage doorkeeper, addressed to Oscar. This was just previous to the outbreak of the big scandal. Another gift left for Wilde on this occasion was a bunch of thistles, with wishes for his good appetite, but the point of this is lost, as Oscar long ago ceased to be an ass.
