Die Pleite des Oskar Wilde. Der Schriftsteller Oskar Wilde büßt bekanntlich im Gefängnisse von Wandsworth im Süden Londons seine schwere Kerkerstrafe ab, die ihm sein Schandprozeß eingetragen hat. Vor einigen Tagen wurde nun Wilde aus seiner Zelle geholt, um sich wegen seines Bankrottes zu verantworten. Wilde hat seinen Schulden von 50,000 fl. Keinen Pfennig gegenüber zu stellen. Auch die Kosten seines Prozesses, die sich auf 7000 fl belaufen, sind ungedeckt. Wilde verantwortete seinen Bankrott darin, daß ihn sein Prozeß in die zahlungsunfähige Lage gebracht hatte. Der Staatsanwalt wies diese Behauptung zurück und legte klar, daß Wilde schon zwei Jahre vor seinem Prozesse zahlungsunfähig war, und daß sein Einkommen von 24.000 fl. Jährlich für seine verschwenderische Lebensweise nicht genügte! Man versuchte durch eine Sammlung die Schulden Wilde´s zu tilgen, doch wurde kaum ein Drittel derselben aufgebracht.
