Society Scandal.
Oscar Wilde Libel Case.
LONDON, April 3.

At the trial of the Marquis of Queensberry, at the Criminal Court, Old Bailey, to-day, for a criminal libel on Mr. Oscar Wilde, the well known artist and author, it was stated in evidence that several effusive letters were sent to young Lord Douglas, among them one containing the statement, "You are the divine thing I want." This, Mr. Wilde explained, was only the natural expression of an artist, and it referred to the beautiful personality of Lord Douglas. It was also stated that the Marquis of Queensberry had visited Mr. Wilde at his residence and had threatened him. In response to the threat, Mr. Wilde called the marquis the "most infamous brute in London."
