One of the American papers which intimated that Oscar Wilde would never be punished by English courts, was the New York World. The World contains now the following:-

Inasmuch as The World has expressed the opinion that Oscar Wilde would never be convicted by an English court, it is only justice to the administration of the law In England to acknowledge that our estimate was mistaken. Justice has been done notwithstanding the reasonable grounds for apprehending that it would not be done, and the best interests of society have been promoted. The moral atmosphere of London is several degrees purer and clearer for the result.

The last sentence is poppycock, but the previous admission is straightforward.
