ENMITY TO ENGLAND.

[…]

Oscar Wilde’s plays, "A Model Husband" and "A Woman of No Importance," are essentially vicious and present the cynical view of life that is natural to an exhausted profligate. While it is easy to talk of art for art’s sake, art always discloses to the penetrating eye the core of the writer’s character. It also reflects the tendencies of the times. We cannot have corrupt literature and retain a pure life. We need a return to plain living and high thinking. "Our peace, our innocence, and pure religion breathing household laws" are our best inheritance ; and as a preparation for a change of taste, the young should be taught to look to the great masterpieces of literature, and the nobler productions of art.
