London [...]

On Monday, the 24th June, an order having been obtained from the Home Office, Mr. William Smith, Deputy Minister of Marine and Fisheries, and Mr. James Johnson paid a visit to Pentonville Prison, London. Under official guidance they were escorted over the extensive establishment and had its workings explained in detail by the officer who accompanied them. They saw the "treadmill at work, about 120 prisoners going through the unenviable performance during the time spent in "hard labour" department of the prison. In answer to a question, Mr. Smith was informed—contrary to a statement published in the press at the time—that Wilde had not been "on the mill." Both visitors were surprised to find the cells in Pentonville so roomy and bright.
