HEAVY BAIL FOR WILDE.
Two Sureties Asked for in £1,250 Each,
with Person Security of £2,500.
[BY THE HERALD’S SPECIAL WIRE.]

LONDON, May 5––Mr. C. Matthews and the Messrs. Humphreys appeared before Mr. Baron Pollock yesterday morning to hear his decision in the matter of Oscar Wilde’s bail.

His Lordship asked for two sureties in £1,250 each, in addition to personal bail of £2,500, but said that should there be any difficulty in finding these sureties a further application might be made on Monday morning when, provided the inquiries which would be instituted by the police were satisfactory, he would be disposed to alter his conditions.

There is, it is said on good authority, no manner of doubt that one surety can readily be found for practically any amount of bail, but it is not nearly so certain that two will be forthcoming. In this case Baron Pollock will probably consent to take one surety in £2,500 or £3,000, in addition to the per-sonal bail.

In any case the bail will have to be tendered at Bow Street and forty-eight hours given to the police to make the necessary inquiries. Wilde will therefore be detained in Holloway until Tuesday or Wednesday.

Meanwhile no application has been made on behalf of Taylor.
