EDITORIAL SUGGESTIONS.

It is to be hoped that the effort being made for the release of the disgraced Oscar Wilde from prison will not succeed. It was the plan of Wilde's friends to have some of the most famous litterateurs of the world sign a petition for the release of the English outcast. But by cable we are informed that those who have been approached on the subject have either declined to sign the petition or returned ambiguous replies. Zola is one of the men who has flat-footedly refused to have anything to do with the scheme to turn loose upon the world the chief of the men who have disgraced manhood not only in London where he lived, but the world over. It is not always easy to agree with Zola, but in this case there is not likely to be one dissenting voice from his position. Only maudlin sentimentalities could have urged the release of Wilde. The longer the rascal is kept behind bars the better for everybody. It would be a distinct gain for morality if he should be allowed to end his days in prison.
