THE CHARGE AGAINST THE
MARQUIS OF QUEENSBERRY.
INTERESTING EVIDENCE.
The case brought against the Marquis of Queensberry by Mr. Oscar Wilde, for criminal libel, is proceeding. In his evidence Mr. Wilde admitted making use of the statement, "You are the divine thing I want," in one of his letters to the Marquis's son, Lord Alfred Douglas, and explained that this was purely a natural and artistic expression for the beautiful. When the Marquis visited Mr. Wilde's residence and used threatening language, the latter admitted having called his assailant an "infamous brute." The case is exciting great interest.
