THE OSCAR WILDE PETITION.
M. ZOLA'S ATTITUDE.

M. Emile Zola refuses to sign the proposed petition for the commutation of the sentence on Oscar Wilde. Amongst the questions he would ask himself before saying anything are:-"Why should French men of letters promote the petition any more than Germans, and, above all, any more than English? Who is at the back of the petition? Is it intended as a sort of advertisement to pin on the back of the prisoner? In fact," said the distinguished author to his interviewer, "I can see a good deal too much literature in the petition and not enough humanity. I am afraid of finding myself duped."
